Help Nick Get To Afghanistan

My ex-assistant and good friend Nick Cardillicchio will soon be heading off to Afghanistan to shoot a portrait essay on the men and women in the Marines who are deployed in that country. He came up with the idea to coincide with ten-year anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks and pitched it to the US Marine Corp, but he hadn’t expected them to get back to him so quickly…and now he’s faced with having to fund the entire project himself or lose his opportunity. He has set up an IndieGoGo campaign funding account where anyone can donate any amount to help him reach his goal. Besides his photography and travel expenses, the USMC requires that he purchase his own safety equipment including bullet proof vest, helmet, flak jacket and eye and ear protection. Kevlar underpants are expensive folks….so please head on over to United States Marines At Work and see if you can show Nick some love?!! I know he would appreciate anything you could toss his way.

And Now…For No Particular Reason…Crash Test Kittens!!!

OK…Since Nobody Else Is Asking…

I find it awfully strange that the photo community…not usually known for keeping their innermost thoughts to themselves…is so tight-lipped about the recent job-swap at New York MagazineJennifer Miller is out and Jody Quon is back as Director of Photography. About a month ago I noticed Miller’s name was not up at the top of the masthead…then the editorial masthead disappeared completely in the past few weeks…and now the current issue has Jody Quon, fresh from her recent gig as Creative Director at W Magazine, listed once again as Photography Director.

And the Photo World hasn’t noticed…..?!!

PopPhoto Gets Damn Ugly

I was recently interviewed by Popular Photography contributor Laurence Chen for the February issue’s ‘HOW * Creative Thinking’ section. The article featured a little behind-the-scenes look at my portrait of Howard Sontag. Big thanks Laurence and PopPhoto, and you can check out the article HERE

How Much Does Snow Weigh?!!

I don’t know how you spent your Saturday, but this was my day.

The Northern Command Headquarters of Damn Ugly Photography has gotten somewhere North of 80 inches of snow in the past month, so I figured it was time to get some of that heavy stuff off of the roof.

As to my question…how much does snow weigh?

A lot !!!

Must-See TV Of The Day: Piers Morgan Tonight

I want to start off by saying how glad I am that CNN finally got rid of that ridiculously self-important dinosaur Larry King and how much I’ve been enjoying the new Piers Morgan Tonight show! After watching the first four nights, it’s bloody refreshing to see an interviewer who doesn’t (overtly) pander to his guests and actually seems to give a shit about finding out something more than the typical publicist-driven crap you read in the tabloids without putting me to sleep. Hey, I love Charlie Rose as much as the next guy, but at times the high-handed tone and mental high-fives he trades with his guests can make you feel like you’re sitting through a Doctoral Seminar given in a language you don’t understand!

His first night with Oprah certainly got the most headlines, but his sit-downs with Howard Stern and Condi Rice were great and last night’s casual back-n-forth over a beer with Ricky Gervais was brilliant! And near the end of the interview, Piers asked a question that resonated with me as well…

Piers Morgan: Do you get to enjoy the fruits of your hard work?
Ricky Gervais: No…I enjoy the hard work! I wake up and it’s a privilege that I can have an idea…nothing gives me an adrenaline rush like an idea.

I have always felt the same way about what I do for a living. The idea that I can make a living at taking photographs of interesting people is mind-boggling, but the added benefit of actually loving what I do is a cherry on top.

Piers Morgan Tonight is on CNN nightly at 9:00PM and you can also follow his pithy thoughts on Twitter

Inspiring & Undeniably Good…

…Well, thank you very much!!!

Damn Ugly was featured this week on both culturedrop.com and sneezr.ca and I must say, while I’m extremely flattered by the opinions others have of me, all of this attention is gonna force me to get up off the couch and do something to prove them right!

Jenan Mujkic runs Sneezr.ca and he stumbled across my work late last year. One of the things he does is an ‘interview-via-email’ that usually asks a single, open-ended question. For me, he actually had two questions and you can read the interview here:

How to be undeniably good. How to be like Brad.

The Kanye Bashing Continues…

Here I was thinkin’ that just maybe I was a little hard on Kanye yesterday, when none other then Josh Groban kicks him in the nuts! I mean…JOSH GROBAN?!!

Am I Becoming A Rude Twitterhead?!!

After being called out at dinner last night for being too wired into my ‘Social Network’ via iPhone and not paying enough attention to my actual friends around the table, this just seems like a perfect way to say I’m sorry and I’ll try not to let it happen again…

Have A Ghouly Halloween !!!

Just in time for Halloween, my friend Laura Breen has finished a wonderful series of illustrations of a murderous little Ghoul-Girl. Probably not well-suited for a 5 year-old, but so much fun for us big kids! Here is Laura’s description of the series…

This series was born out of my love for horror films. The idea first started out as Red Riding Hood…after visiting grandma…suffers a bite from the wolf which then turns her into this feral child. Originally it consisted of only four images until a friend of mine asked me to re-visit the series for a project he was curating on fear. So it grew to the magical number of thirteen.

I call the series “Kindertrauma”.

Ahhh, childhood.
Sweet children
sweeter memories.

Happy Halloween Y’all….

Bear Concerns…..

My mom worries about the fact that I have a lotta bears running around in my front yard, so she sent me this little reminder that it’s not really my yard…it’s theirs and I’m just using it…..

Fun At The Fair!

Yesterday I channeled my inner farmer and hit the Harwinton County Fair, complete with ox-pulls, carnival rides, corn dogs and a whole mess of chickens and horses and cows and bunnies! My iPhone (set to ‘Hipstamatic’, of course!) has recorded some choice bits for you to enjoy…

Killer Attack Rooster…

Very Friendly Horse…

Sleepy Bunny…

Tiny Donkey…

Girls Sitting With Cows…

Terrifying Rides…

Whac-A-Mole…

Dead Guys…

…And The Best Damned Potatoes You’ve Ever Seen!!!

Now I know that still pictures hardly do justice to a good carnival ride, but if you watch this video long enough, it might generate enough vertigo to make you sick….

Do you feel like judging a few chickens?!!

Not a fan of chickens? Then how about braving the crowds to look at the prize-winning bunnies?!!

And if all that wasn’t enough fun for ya, The Flying Wallendas were even on hand cheating death for the 7,496th time!!!

Katy Perry On Saturday Night Live

I have absolutely nothing more to add…..

Are Y’All Ready For An 80mp Digital Back ?!!

Barely a week after I was pissing and moaning about the big announcement from PhaseOne that they were introducing a $42,000 digital back that captures only Black & White images, comes today’s bombshell from Leaf that they’re gonna now about to trot out has to be to most ridiculous bit of technological overkill yet seen on the digital landscape…an 80MP digital back that kicks out a 165mb RAW file and…ya might wanna sit down for this…a 480mb TIFF file! Now for those of you who understand such things, then you know that by starting with a base TIFF of 480mb, your final layered, retouched & messed-with file can easily end up being larger than TWO GIGABYTES in size!!! For those less geek-savvy, let’s just agree that the file size this thing produces is waaaaaay bigger than just about anybody needs, wants, asked for or even thought would be necessary! With resolution like this I would imagine you could stand on top of a tall building in New York and take a pretty sharp picture of Boston (I kid, of course!), but no…the number one reason Leaf claims this thing is necessary is to “eliminate Moiré and more perfectly render objects – from the texture of fine fabrics to the smooth curves of car metal”…! Now you’ll hafta excuse me whilst I digest that statement, because I’m on my third Leaf back and with each new back Leaf has made the exact same claim…and I still have Moiré! Oh…not so much that it makes any real difference and what there is can usually be eliminated with a bit of Photoshop fuckery, but I hafta ask…just what is the new 80mp Aptus-II 12 with its’ newly designed 53.7×40.3mm full-frame CCD sensor really good for besides forcing its’ owner to buy stock in companies that manufacture hard drives?!!

Just for kicks, I took the last job I did with my ‘Old Skool’, 33MP Leaf Aptus 75S and ran the numbers to see what the difference in storage would be if I shot the same job on the new Aptus-II 12. I shot 307 RAW files, each one of which is 68.3 megabytes in size, that translated into 20.97 gigabytes of total space used, and quite frankly, that’s already a huge pile of ‘zeroes’ and ‘ones’ filling up disc space! However, the same 307 RAW files shot on the Aptus-II 12 with its 165 megabyte capture rate will give you a 50.66 gigabyte meatball that you have to store on multiple redundant backups systems until they plant your dead ass in the ground! That’s a lotta gigabytes, Baby!

Oh yeah….the Aptus-II 12 is gonna come in at about $32 Grand, just in case you wanted to start saving up your pennies now…..

R.I.P. Jay Colton

I woke up today to the terrible news that Jay Colton, photographer, photo editor and educator, died Saturday while teaching at the International Photography Festival/Paraty em Foco, in Brazil. I have known Jay since the early 80’s, but after many years of not seeing each other, we had rekindled our friendship in the past year. Details are hard to come by, but he apparently collapsed while conducting portfolio reviews at the festival and never regained consciousness. He leaves behind his son Christopher and wife Moira and the entire New York photo community will mourn his passing.

The following was a news report from Brazil on the Paraty em Foco Festival that featured Jay…

WE’RE ALL GOING TO AUSTRALIA!!!!!

We’ll…..not you and me, but the entire studio full of bawling, drooling, Oprah-obsessed Super Fans who happened to be holding a Golden Ticket to the debut show of her final season are packing their bags and heading off for a free week in Kangarooland!

And if that news wasn’t enough to make the crying masses wet themselves, Oprah told ’em that none other than famous pilot John Travolta would be the one flying them there!!!

This is all giving me a massive headache…….

And Now… A Digital Back For ‘Pure B&W Images’…?!!

The steady march of technology in the photo biz often makes my head spin, especially with the price of admission factored in, but this mornings email from PhaseONE even made me take a deep breath. For the mind-bending sum of $41,990.00, photographers can now enjoy a ‘pure’ digital Black & White experience with the release of the new 39 Megapixel PhaseONE Achromatic+ Back. That’s right…42 Grand and you can only shoot B&W! Now I don’t wanna seem too Old Skool here, but if ‘regular’ digital backs are having such a hard time capturing Black and White images, couldn’t we just load in a roll of Tri-X like the old days and be happy? Was there really that big of an outcry from the photo community for a piece of equipment that essentially moves the medium backwards?!! I’m not saying I don’t love Black & White imagery…far from it…but spending 42 Large on a digital back is sort of like inventing a High Definition Video Camera that only shoots silent movies! And yes…Phase is touting the scientific applications of such a back as one of the main reasons for going forward with such a project, but you just know there are gonna be a lotta kids with messed up priorities who will have the Achromatic+ on their wish list this Christmas!

Don Draper Wins A Clio? Big Deal…I’ve Got A Clio!!!

OK…so on Sunday night, just as ‘Mad Men’ was lassoing its third consecutive Emmy for Best Dramatic Series, I was over on AMC watching that nights episode where our hero, Don Draper, wins his first Clio Award (and the apparent pain & suffering that comes with the honor). Well, maybe pain & suffering is a bit strong, since as Don does a victory lap around a bar with his trophy, all the gals in attendance are clamoring to spend the night with him! And that’s when it hit me…wait a second…..I have a Clio, and the damned thing has never managed to get me the ladies like it did for Don!!! I kinda think I got a raw deal…….or maybe I just need a tailored suit, a high & tight haircut, and a skinny tie!
